Style by Ra: Tie Width

Welcome to my blog! I am proud to introduce a new menswear style tip section to my site.

Working at The Tie Bar NYC pop up has made me even more passionate about menswear and dressing well. Styling customers is a lot of fun so recently I decided it would make a great addition to my blog. We get alot of questions about some of the technical aspects of suiting so these tips should help with that. I will be illustrating and explaining various style rules in these posts. Actually consider them more like guidelines. I enjoy breaking fashion rules from time to time myself. (Like wearing a black suit outside of formal events. With a colorful tie.) One of the most popular questions I’ve gotten is about tie width. You can wear a skinny tie (2 to 2.5 inches.) or a more traditional tie. (3 to 3.5 inches.) What you choose depends on body type, your suit and where you work.

1. Your tie width should compliment your size.

A leaner guy might want to wear a 2 or 2.5 inch tie. Just like a stockier guy would want to opt for a 3 or 3.5 inch tie.

2. The width of your tie should compliment the width of your blazer.

The skinner the tie, the wider the lapel. The wider the lapel, the wider the tie.

3. Some office dress codes may require thicker ties.

I get a lot of customers that say they have to shy away from super skinny ties. A 2.5 inch tie may be the cutoff point. Use a 3 inch tie to be on the safe side in a corporate job for example.
