Style by Ra: The Black Suit

Welcome to my blog! Here’s this week’s menswear tips.

Today I’m starting my “essential suits” multi part series. Every man should have a few suits that can be used for different purposes. A black suit is typically considered the most formal suit you can buy (second to tuxedos.) Generally reserved for formal gatherings like funerals, weddings, etc.

Now I like to get a lot of mileage out of my black suit so I will wear it outside of these situations. Of course I generally don’t wear a white dress shirt and black tie. A colorful shirt and accessories can breathe life into an otherwise stiff black suit. See below for examples.

Formal Black Suit with white dress shirt,  pocket square and silver tie bar.

Black suit with windowpane shirt, blue tie, orange pocket square and tie bar.

Black suit with pink dress shirt, repp stripe tie, black tie bar and green pocket square.

Black suit with a white pocket square and no tie. Aka “Air Tie” because having the shirt buttoned up gives that illusion.
