I rarely do self portraits. If I’m illustrating a subject I would rather choose someone else instead of looking inward. The few times I do choose self portraiture is always a rewarding experience. I learn a lot about who I am as a person and an artist. I had my frustrations with this painting because I had to tackle it in bits and pieces. I rarely had more than 30 minutes to paint so I stretched the work out over three months. I started with the camera, then the hands, face, and then the suit. The texture is king and I really emphasized that. Everything from my suit to the camera to the glasses all have their unique textures. All in all this turned out to be a 14 hour painting.
